"Has Bruce said anything to you recently?" he demanded, pushing his plate aside, doubt flooding his voice. "You toldhe was interested in someone else. So why hold on to him?" Even now, he couldn't bring himself to yell. He was just furious—at himself for not being enough, for risking everything with his confession.
"Ethan," Alyssa said softly, her eyes shining, "you're the biggest fool in the entire world." "What?" he whispered, stunned.
"The dumbest idiot alive." "If I still had feelings for a guy I liked in high school-if I still fantasized about marrying him and having his children-what would you do?" Alyssa asked gently.
Ethan froze. After a long, heavy silence, he looked away. His voice was thick when he finally spoke. “I'd let you go." "You wouldn't propose anymore?" "No." He swallowed hard. Proposing now would only rip away whatever dignity he had left.
"I see," Alyssa said simply.
Ethan said nothing. The silence between them grew suffocating.
"Would you still love me?" Alyssa asked quietly.
"What do you takefor?" he snapped, but even as he spoke, he couldn't find it in himself to be cruel. "Yes, I've had a crush on you for a long time, but I was too scared to ruin our friendship. That doesn't mean I have no selfrespect." He wouldn't cling to her after everything she'd just said.
He could accept that she still had feelings for someone else. But not that she remained with him while her heart belonged to another.
"I'll talk to both our families and explain the breakup," Ethan said, still thinking.
