Vespera and Nancy were rendered speechless. They awkwardly stared after Dominic, who had just walked off to the dining area.
Dominic hadn't even tried to pretend. He just crashed right through their carefully choreographed performance like he couldn't care less. He was truly insufferable.
Vespera and Nancy pretended not to hear anything. One busied herself with her phone, while the other twirled a strand of hair and looked out the window at the sunset.
"Ms. Gildon, Ms. Acosta, shall we eat?" Raymond asked with a warm smile.
Vespera wanted to say that forcing down this dinner might be harder than chewing nails, but Nancy stood up and said, "Sure. I'm starving. I didn't eat much on the plane." Nancy walked toward the dining area with barely a pause. Meanwhile, in the back of Vespera's mind, a voice whispered, "Don't follow. Just turn around and go downstairs. Let them catch up. Let them talk. Don't get pulled into this." But then Vespera remembered the way Dominic had held her hand earlier. His grip was so firm, and it had stung and comforted her all at once.
"Vespera, what are you spacing out for?" Calvert asked, grabbing her wrist and dragging her forward out of nowhere.
Follow on NovᴇlEnglish.nᴇtCalvert leaned in and whispered, "That woman is bad news. Harry almost committed suicide over her. Mr. Reid despises her." Vespera was shocked. She was already overwhelmed with complicated emotions. Now, Calvert dropped a bombshell right in her ear.
When they were about to reach the dining area, Vespera grabbed Calvert and asked in a low voice, "Who's Harry?" Calvert mouthed the answer, "The third son of the Reid family." Vespera was even more shocked. Even as she took her seat, she was in a daze.
Both Gerard and Alex had hinted that something messy had gone down between Dominic and Nancy. Back then, Vespera thought that something must have happened if Gerard and Alex said that.
However, she was confused because she knew what kind of person Dominic was after spending twith him. Now, everything clicked.
Nancy had been two-timing them. She was dating Dominic and Harry. When she got caught, she dumped Harry but tried to patch things up with Dominic. However, Dominic wasn't someone who played around. He cut ties completely. Harry, on the other hand, had taken it hard and attempted suicide.
It was no wonder Dominic loathed Nancy.
Vespera could practically hear tic music swelling in her head. This was the stuff of primetsoap operas, a love triangle among two brothers and a woman.
Dominic glanced over and saw Vespera sitting there, lost in thought with her brows furrowed. He muttered under his breath, "Snowball, pull your mom back to earth." Dominic passed Snowball to Raymond, and Raymond handed it to Vespera.
"Vespera," Raymond called out.
"Huh?" Vespera snapped out of her daze as a warm and fluffy weight landed in her arms. She scratched Snowball and sighed.
Dominic just stared at her. What on earth was she thinking about? Meanwhile, Nancy was discussing work with Dominic while eating. She kept things professional and well-paced, and he responded out of courtesy. Nonetheless, it was enough to give her hope.
Vespera, however, kept her head down, eating silently. She didn't contribute a single word. She had no fire or competitive spark.
She thought, "Why bother? What's the point of competing in a match when the referee has already decided the winner? Someone is also cheating." A voice then interrupted her thoughts. "Vera, did Raymond put a silencing spell in your food tonight?" Vespera looked up to find Dominic watching her. She gave him a smile and then returned to her food. Shez genuinely didn't feel like talking. Usually, she would make smalltalk, but now, she was just too worn out to make the effort.
Upon seeing that, Dominic put his cutlery down.
After dinner, Vespera put Snowball to bed and stepped out of the room. At this time, Nancy had gone off to unpack in the guest room.
Dominic was waiting for Vespera in the living hall. When she cout, he said, "Con. Let's head downstairs." Vespera rubbed her temple. "You can't stay at my place. My parents are visiting soon, and there's no way I can explain this to them. You have other options."
Dominic's expression turned cold.
"Think of a place forto stay,m Vespera responded, "You can then." Vespera go back to that glasshouse or home.
You can also stay..." Seeing how Vespera answered without hesitation, Dominic let out a bitter laugh. "I can just stay here, too. You wouldn't care, would you?"
Vespera stayed silent. Looking down at her palm, she mumbled, "That's not what I meant. I didn't say it right. Don't be upset, alright? Just do what you want." Without waiting for an answer, Vespera continued, "Snowball has settled in. I'll head down first." Then, she left. Inside the elevator, she clenched her fist and punched the wall in frustration.
Late at night, Vespera felt uneasy
after returning to her apartment. Her eyes kept darting to the door. Was Dominic coming down? Should she give him a call and tell him to cdown? Should she just let him stay the night? She picked up her phone and bit her nails, agonizing for what felt like hours. When she finally checked the time, her heart sank. It was already 10:00 pm.
It had already been three hours, which meant Dominic wouldn't cdown. Did he go somewhere else or stay upstairs?
