The cat let out a few small meows, almost like it could read Vespera's thoughts. Tilting its head, it looked up at her with big, round eyes.
Vespera melted on the spot. She crouched down and gently stroked the cat's head. "You've gotten chubbier." The cat leaned into her hand, rubbing its head against her palm and meowing in a cute tone.
Dominic crouched down beside Vespera and said, "It doesn't have a nyet. You should nit." Vespera thought for a moment and responded, "It's all soft and chubby, and its belly is so white. How about Snowball?" Dominic was at a loss for words.
Noticing his silence, Vespera turned to look at him. "Does it sound bad? Do you not like it?" Dominic laughed. "No, it's great. Really. It's perfect." Wrapping his arms around her from behind, he joined her in petting Snowball. "Alright, from now on, your nis Snowball." Snowball, now saddled with a nthat sounded suspiciously like something someone might say while playing in snow, meowed cheerfully, clearly pleased with its new identity.
Dominic and Vespera stayed like that in the corridor, crouched side by side and completely absorbed in their own little world. They petted Snowball and laughed softly as if no one else existed.
They had almost forgotten someone was still sitting in the living hall.
Follow on NovᴇlEnglish.nᴇtNancy could hear Dominic's voice, and the way he spoke made her heart ache. He seemed so gentle.
She watched him willingly squat down with another woman to play with a cat. The cat had such a ridiculous name, yet he said it was perfect? Every breath felt like a blade slicing ugh her chest. She got up, to storm out. However, halfway through her first step, Fawn's warning echoed in her mind.
Dominic was doing it on purpose. He wanted to make her jealous.
Nancy clenched her fists. If he wanted to play this game, she would play too. Composing herself, she walked steadily down the corridor.
By the tshe reached them, they had just stood up, still cradling Snowball in their arms.
"The cat is adorable. But if I remember right, you used to be a clean freak. You never raised pets, did you?" Nancy smiled and asked. Then, she glanced at Snowball in Vespera's arms.
"Nancy, you really need to stop assuming you know everything," said Dominic indifferently.
Nancy's smile faltered. She stared at him, eyes swimming with hurt, but didn't dare lash out or cry.
Fawn was right. Dominic liked Vespera because she was obedient and didn't talk back. At that thought, Nancy believed that she could fake that, too.
Meanwhile, Vespera stayed silent, her attention fully on Snowball in her arms. She wasn't interested in the .
Was Dominic trying to make his ex jealous? It was possible, but Vespera wasn't going to waste energy guessing his intentions. For all she knew he might turn around one day and fall for Nancy again. People were fickle.
"Ms. Gildon, are you free tomorrow? It has been so long since I've been back to Halewick. Everything has changed. I would love it if you could showaround," said Nancy with a friendly smile after walking up to Vespera.
Vespera nodded without hesitation. "Sure." It seemed that Nancy wasn't planning to go on the offensive this time. Vespera preferred this plan better. After all, pretending to be civil took less effort than fighting.
"It's a date then. By the way, I brought you a little gift," said Nancy, pulling Vespera to the living hall.
Vespera played along and pretended to be surprised. "A gift? That's so kind of you." Nancy and Vespera sat down in the living hall. Nancy opened her suitcase and pulled out a box. Inside was a beautiful pair of earrings.
Vespera looked them over and smiled, showing that she liked them.
"Lethelp you put them on," offered Nancy.
Vespera replied, "Sure." The two sat side by side on the couch, chatting like close friends as Nancy carefully helped Vespera put on the earrings.
Just then, Raymond walked out with Dominic's luggage. The sight of the couch made him stop mid-step. He had only been gone for a few minutes. What had happened while he was gone?
Right then Calvert arrived for dinner, idly spinning a pocket knife-in one hand. The moment he saw what was n.
happening in the living hall, the knife slipped right out of his fingers and hit the floor.
Raymond and Calvert stood frozen. Meanwhile, Dominic said nothing. His face gave nothing away.
After a long moment, Dominic chuckled softly and walked over Without a word he scooped Showball out of Vespera's arms and turned toward the dining area. "Con, Snowball. Your mom still wants to put on an act. Cand eat withfirst," said Dominic.
