| feel for her. | feel her fears, the uncertainty of the situation. If Calvin hadn't been locked up, they'd probably be
celebrating the news, instead of Piper being all alone, crying her eyes out.
| wish | could do something to help. I'm even toying with the idea of letting Calvin go for her sake, but what
about me? What about the justice | deserve? Because of his actions, his greed, he wrecked my life and almost
gotkilled.
If Micah hadn't helpedescape, I'd probably be dead by now, executed for conspiring against my alpha, and
with my death, there would have been Aspen's too.
As much as I'd want her to have Calvin by her side, | can't set him free. Not when his actions brought on a chain
reaction that nearly destroyed my life.
By the t| slip into the house, the corridors are quiet. Aspen isn't awake yet, and the thought makessmile
a little. She always sleeps the hardest when she's had a long day, her small body curled in a mess of blankets

| head to the bathroom and take a shower, letting the hot water run down my body, trying to wash away the

"I need to tell you something." Her tone is serious, in a way that makes my stomach twist.
"What is it?"
"I won't be available for a while."
Her words slam into me, and my heart drops.
"What do you mean you won't be available?" My voice comes out sharper than | mean it to.
"I'm going into a sort of hibernation state. Think of it like pulling back to restore myself."
| shake my head, pacing as my chest tightens. "No, no, you can't just leave. Not now."
"I need this, Sadie," she whispers. "There are things | need to take care of and for that | need staway."
"And you need to abandonfor that?" my voice catches. "What am | supposed to do without you?"
"I'm not abandoning you, but | need to do this, she says gently. "And you'll be okay. You're stronger now, Sadie.
Your powers have awakened, and you can defend yourself That's why | waited until now."
Her calmness only makes the panic rise in me. "That's not the point! I-Nyx, | need you. You can't just disappear
without explaining. Why now?"
"I'll explain everything when | cback, but you need to trust me, Sadie. This is both for our good."
How is any of this good for me? How's being cut off from each other any good for us?
| stop walking, my throat tight. "We still haven't dealt with Xena. What if something happens while you're gone?"
